Frenzied finish to Little League season with All-City Tournament

June 14, 2006

The Petaluma Little League season is heading for a frenzied finish. After being delayed for a seeming eternity by spring's continuing rains, Little Leaguers are making up for lost time in the first All-City Tournament.

All 18 Major Division teams from the Petaluma National, Petaluma Valley and Petaluma American Little Leagues are involved in the tournament which features three pools of six teams each. Each team will play four games within their pool.

The top two teams in each pool and two wild card teams will advance to a single-elimination final tournament to be played from Tuesday, June 20 through Sunday, June 25.

In Pool A are the Indians, A's and Reds from the American League; Whitman Insurance and Roland from the Valley League and Pinky's Pizza from the National League. Whitman is the two-time Valley League champion, while the Reds finished second in the American League.

In Sunday's first games, the Indians knocked off the A's, 3-0, in a match of American League teams; Whitman lived up to its championship reputation with a 6-2 win over the Reds; and Pinky's upheld National League honor with a 4-3 win over Roland.

In Pool B are Lucky 7 and the Elks from the National League; the Angels and the Yankees from the American League; and Century 21 and Bank of Marin from the Valley League. The Elks are the National League champions, while Century 21 was second in the Valley League and the Yankees were third in the American League.

In Sunday's opening-day games, Lucky 7 blanked the Yankees, 4-0; the Angels slugged Bank of Marin, 11-1; and the Elks got off to a strong start with an impressive 4-1 win over Century 21 in one of the premier first-day matchups.

In Pool C are the Giants and Red Sox from the American League, EMG and First Security from the National League and the Petaluma Police and Moreda's from the Valley League. The Giants are champions of the American League, while First Security finished second in the National League and the Petaluma Police were third in the Valley League.
