SCCA letting 'us' down?

June 21, 2006

EDITOR: Thank you Sonoma County Conservation Action for not "letting us down!" Last I checked, SCCA is an environmental organization and the 6th Assembly District race was about two counties, not one. By giving a co-endorsement to Marin candidate Jared Huffman, SCCA retained its credibility and sent a clear message to other state candidates from Sonoma County: "Don't expect SCCA to support only local Sonoma interests with less qualified candidates over what's best for the environment" in a two-county state regional election.

Petaluma Mayor David Glass is apparently so myopic and parochial that he has forgotten that elections are supposed to be about picking the best candidate, and environmental organizations are supposed to be about doing what's best for the environment. SCCA stayed true to its mission and purpose and reached the same conclusion as every other environmental organization to interview the candidates (Sierra Club, California League of Conservation Voters, Clean Water Action, Vote the Coast and several others): HuffmanÕs credentials, experience and track record was simply the best.

We, the Marin and Sonoma County environmentalists, support Jared Huffman, there's no question about that, and thanks to SCCA, Sonoma County gets to know a lot more about him now as our next 6th district state representative ... and someone who will represent both Marin and Sonoma counties exceptionally well!

JOHN E. KING, Penngrove
