Fire calls

June 14, 2006

The Petaluma Fire Department received 47 medical calls and 40 fire or other emergency calls from June 5 to 11. These are some of the incidents the department responded to.

TUESDAY, JUNE 6

10:14 p.m. - Firefighters responded to a call indicating there was a fire at Central Market, 42 Petaluma Blvd. North. They found light smoke in the occupied restaurant, but no outward signs of a fire. Firefighters discovered that the smoke had come from the flue of a wood-burning brick oven, and later found that a small fire had occurred in a ceiling light fixture in the women’s bathroom. The fixture was removed from the ceiling and the circuit breaker for the bathroom light was tripped.

THURSDAY, JUNE 8

6:15 a.m. - A three-vehicle accident occurred in the southbound lanes of Highway 101 on the Petaluma River Bridge. A medical crew transported one person to Kaiser in Terra Linda.

FRIDAY, JUNE 9

9:59 p.m. - Fire personnel reported to 301 E St., where they found heavy flames and smoke coming from the rear and side windows of an apartment. Six people fled the unit. Fire crews extended multiple hose lines to the building, and brought the fire under control. The fire spread into the attic, however, requiring fire crews to cut a vent hole to allow heat and smoke to escape while the fire was extinguished from underneath. Estimated losses are $100,000 for the structure and $35,000 for contents. The occupants were displaced by the fire, and are being housed by the Red Cross.

SATURDAY, JUNE 10

2:11 p.m. - Two vehicles suffered extensive damages in an accident at 208 Hill Blvd. One person was outside of a vehicle, sitting on the roadway. A medic provided advanced life support, and the patient was transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

5:07 p.m. - Two people were injured in a three-car accident at northbound Highway 101 at Kastania Road. Two vehicles were in the center of the roadway and one was on the northbound shoulder of the freeway, crashed into a tree. Four people had been in the three cars. One person suffered right ankle and wrist discomfort and another had neck, back and head pain, and was transported to the emergency room at Petaluma Valley Hospital. The other two were not injured.

SUNDAY, JUNE 11

6:06 p.m. - Light smoke was reported coming from a building at 350 Grant Ave. A firefighter entered the building and found that a fire had begun after a pan of oil on a stove overheated. The occupant extinguished the fire and carried the pan outside. The fire damaged the stove and range hood, and smoke caused some kitchen damage. Occupants were able to return to the house.
