A fully caffeinated event Western Regional Barista Competition at Sheraton this weekend, with free espresso for all March 1, 2006 By DANE GOLDEN
More than 20 of California's best coffeehouse baristas will compete in the Specialty Coffee Association of America's Western Regional Barista Competition at the Sheraton Sonoma County-Petaluma this weekend, March 4 and 5. Taylor Maid Farms Organic Coffee of Sebastopol and Tea and Flying Goat Coffee of Healdsburg and Santa Rosa are sponsoring the event. The winner will win a trip to the U.S. Barista Champion-ships April 7 through 10 in Charlotte, N.C. Seating is available for 100 spectators and standing room for many more, but get there early. Last year's competition at Roshambo Winery in Healdsburg was standing room only, and the event is expected to be so again this year. This is due in no small part to the fact that in addition to the three espresso machines used in the competition, a fourth machine will on hand to serve espressos and cappuccinos to attendees free of charge, made with California-roasted beans. Brewed coffee will also be complimentary, as well as pastries from Artisan and Odwalla bars and drinks. The event will run from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. During the competition, each contestant must prepare and serve three espresso beverages for each of four sensory judges: One espresso, one cappuccino, and one "signature" drink of their own creation. Competitors will have only 15 minutes to prepare all 12 drinks while being observed by two technical judges. Competitors will be judged based on drink taste, presentation, technical skills and cleanliness. Four Flying Goat baristas will be representing Sonoma County in the field of 23 competitors. There will be one entrant from Hawaii. (Contact Dane Golden at dgolden@arguscourier.com)
