Yesteryears is an often amusing look back at local history, as viewed through the pages of the Argus-Courier.

The promenade concert given at the theatre on Wednesday night by the Second Regimental Band of San Francisco was a grand success as far as the music was concerned, but not in the attendance. We regret that so meritorious an effort on the part of that most excellent band should have been so lightly appreciated by our citizens. (June 17, 1881)
In front of Bowman's shop on Western Avenue, is lying a large lamp post which is to be placed in front of the residence of H.T. Fairbanks. The lamp to surmount it is the most elegant gas lamp outside of San Francisco. (June 17, 1881)

The ice cream parlor at Towne's drug store is now in full blast and the quality of the cream is so excellent they will no doubt have a large sale this season to those who like to take it home in paper pails. (June 15, 1906)

The T & D Jr. Enterprises has designated the Mystic Theater the "family theater" of this city and mother and dad can go and take all the kiddies because the price of admission has been greatly reduced. The price for adults at all times will be 15 cents. The price for kiddies will be 5 cents, until further notice. The same high grade attractions as heretofore will be billed and the same attention paid to detail, said Manager Naify. None of the old customs will be omitted and there will be no curtailment of the efficient service. (June 22, 1931)

A standing-room-only crowd at the Garden Way Stage cheered Wednesday as the Miss Sonoma-Marin crown passed to 19-year-old Lillian Cerini. The event was a glittering finale to opening day of the 1981 Petaluma Fair. There to see her successor crowned and congratulate her was 1980's Miss Sonoma-Marin, Bonnie Finkbohner. Lillian was chosen for her beauty, poise and appearance from a field of 11 young women. She currently works for The Emporium in Santa Rosa and hopes to become an actress, starting out with television commercials. She'll move toward her goal this fall when she begins attending theatrical classes at the JC. A dance student for five years as well as a modeling school graduate, she has performed before an audience often, but this was the first time she had to speak publicly. "The first time I spoke over the mike it was very hard," she said. "I was scared. But after the first couple of words it was okay. The most difficult part came when we had to walk out there in our bathing suits. Then I was really scared. I was the last one to appear in western wear too, so I just had a couple of minutes to get out of that outfit and into my bathing suit. It was confusing, but it was fun too." (June 25, 1981)
